The Hum Hearers wins the 2025 Wesley Michel Wright Prize

Shey Marque The Hum Hearers

Shey Marque's poetry collection The Hum Hearers has won the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Arts Wesley Michel Wright Prize for an original work of verse or poetry.

Shey’s poems were awarded for bringing together densely allusive lyricism and lively, tactile language, which reflect and challenge ideas of love, genetics, mortality, and the cosmos to subtly devastating effect.

From Shey: "I want to express my appreciation and gratitude for this unexpected honour. This award strengthens the standing of my collection, The Hum Hearers, published earlier this year and will no doubt help to promote it through increased visibility. The prize money will go towards writing residencies and research activities to further develop my new manuscript in progress."

Wesley Michel Wright was an alumnus of the University of Melbourne who achieved a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. Mr Wright left a gift in his will supporting the Wesley Michel Wright Prize with the purpose of awarding an Australian author of original verse or poetry. Shey Marque will receive $5230 as prize money for her achievement. Find out more.
