The longlist of 16 books are celebrated for their literary merit, quality research, readability and value to the community. The judges stated that the longlist "showcase the extraordinary breadth and depths of Australian writing" across all genres and that choosing "a 16-book longlist from the 176 entries was not an easy task for the judges but it was an enjoyable one, as all of the writers opened new worlds for us."
