The 2025 Dorothy Hewett Award is opening for submissions for the month of November 2024.

The 2025 Dorothy Hewett Award is calling for submissions from writers across Australia who have an unpublished manuscript and are seeking publication.

Eligible manuscripts must be unpublished and a work of fiction, narrative non-fiction, or poetry, inclusive of hybrid genres such as verse novels or memoir. The winner will receive a cash prize of $10000, courtesy of the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, and will be offered a publishing contract with UWA Publishing. The 2025 Dorothy Hewett Award is accepting submissions throughout the month of November 2024. Entrants can submit here from the opening date.

The judges for the 2025 award are Tony Hughes-d’Aeth (UWA Chair of Australian Literature), Kate Pickard (UWAP publishing manager), James Jiang (editor for Sydney Review of Books), and Caitlin Maling (WA poet) .

In 2024, Kaya Ortiz was announced as the winner for their unpublished poetry manuscript Past & Parallel Lives which will be published by UWA Publishing in March 2025. Previous winners include Kirsty Iltners (QLD), Brendan Ritchie (WA), Josh Kemp (WA), Kgshak Akec (VIC), and Karen Wyld (SA). The inaugural winner of the award was Josephine Wilson for her novel Extinctions which went on to win the Miles Franklin Literary Award.

Dorothy Hewett (1923-2002) is considered one of Australia’s most important writers, her work challenging the norms of 20th century Australian culture. For submission guidelines and terms

Submissions open on 1 November 2024 at 10am AWST and close on 30 November 2024 at 5pm AWST. The shortlist and winner will be announced in 2025.
