Jenny and Bill Bunbury have been shortlisted for the 2025 Margaret Medcalf Award for their book Settlement, Struggle and Success: Margaret River and its Old Hospital, 1924–2024 published last year by UWA Publishing.

The award recognises excellence in the research and the use of State Archives and honours Margaret Medcalf OAM, Western Australia’s second State Archivist, for her landmark contribution to the development of the State archives collection in Western Australia, which was established in 1945 and is 80 years old this year. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in October 2025. Congratulations Jenny and Bill on your achievement!

About the book

The Group Settlement Scheme (1922–30) encouraged mainly British settlers to establish a dairy industry and created the need for a doctor and a publicly funded hospital in the small Margaret River townsite. In Settlement, Struggle and Success Jenny and Bill Bunbury trace the history of this hundred-year-old hospital, now the Margaret River Community Centre, as well as the development of the district.
