Bobbie Oliver
Jean Beadle (1867-1942), was a tireless advocate for women and children’s rights. As the founder of Labor Women’s Organisations in Fremantle and the Eastern Goldfields, one of Western Australia’s first female Justices of the Peace, a voluntary Children’s Court Magistrate and a keen writer and orator, Mrs Beadle played a prominent role in state politics throughout the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.
In Jean Beadle: A Life of Labor Activism, historian Bobbie Oliver surveys the life and legacy of this courageous proto-feminist. Whether perched precariously on a card table campaigning on behalf of striking timber workers, chairing a tempestuous meeting of Labor Women, or mastering the (then) new technology of radio to make broadcasts on behalf of the ALP, Mrs Beadle emerges with due dignity as one of Australia’s great unsung civic heroines.
