The paintings of Imants Tillers are made up of fragments of borrowed images and language assembled into complex, multi-layered amalgams. They function as surfaces to be read, even recited, with elements being repeated, echoing or reappearing across different works. The words and text phrases - bits extracted from other writers, poems, titles of other works, lists of names and places - connect with and float in and out of the images. By chance, or the movement of the eye, words come into focus and a line is read but then recedes as another fragment comes to the fore. in Tillers' work there has always ben more than meets the eye, a strata which extends well out from the painting.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Imants Tillers: the long poem, 12 February - 19 April 2009.
