Wirlomin Noongar Language and Stories

Wirlomin Noongar Language and Stories is a registered not-for-profit Aboriginal corporation made up of members with an ancestral connection to the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The Wirlomin family totem is the wirlo, the bush stone curlew, and Wirlomin means ‘the bush stone curlew people’.

The corporation formed in 2007 with the aim to reclaim and revitalise Wirlomin Noongar stories and songs and to build up the south coast Noongar dialect. Over 20 years the group has brought elders and community members together to record stories and songs passed down through the generations and supplemented this with research into the historical Noongar language archives. The group has shared some of these revitalised stories as picture books with the hope that it will support Noongar families and communities to consolidate, enhance and celebrate their Noongar cultural heritage.

The eight stories in this series are  Dwoort Baal Kaat (The Dogs Who Turned into Seals)Mamang (The Whale); Noongar Mambara Bakitj (Noongar Spirit Flight); Yira Boornak Nyininy (Sitting High in a Tree); Ngaawily Nop (Blue Groper Boy); Noorn (The Snake); Ngalak Yongka Miyak Koorliny (Visiting the Kangaroo Moon Site) and  Wirrawoorliny (Whirlwind). All the books share cultural stories from the south coast of WA between Albany and Esperance, and Wirlomin are proud to share their Country and culture with readers.
