Oron Catts is Curator of HyperPrometheus and the co-founder and Director of SymbioticA, the Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts. He is an artist, researcher and curator whose pioneering work with the Tissue Culture & Art Project, established in 1996, is considered a leading biological art project. He is credited as being the first to grow and eat in-vitro meat and leather. In 2000 he co-founded SymbioticA, an artistic research centre housed within the School of Human Sciences at the University of Western Australia. Under Catts’s leadership SymbioticA has gone on to win the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Hybrid Art (2007), the WA Premier Science Award (2008) and became a Centre of Excellence in 2008. Catts has been a professor at large in contestable design and a visiting professor of design interaction at the Royal College of Arts, London; a research fellow at the Tissue Engineering and Organ Fabrication lab, Harvard Medical School; a visiting scholar at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University; and a visiting professor at Aalto University’s Future Art Base, Helsinki. Catts publishes and exhibits extensively in both art and science contexts.
